Painting From Life with Jack Keledjian
Tuesdays ongoing
9:00-4:00 pm $75/day
These Painting From Life offerings provide artists and students the opportunity to study with award winning Putney Painter, Hagop Keledjian. In these classes, participants acquire a taste of the technical, emotional, and intellectual approaches to oil painting from life through still lifes, portrait and landscape painting. These sessions include demonstrations followed by 1:1 instruction and critiques. Keledjian is developing serious groups of painters to work with on an ongoing basis, similar to The Putney Painters, of which he has been a member since 2001. The Maestro, Richard Schmid, continually encourages students at Village Arts not to box themselves into thinking that you are only a landscape painter, or only a portrait painter. If you understand how to see properly, you can paint anything. Jack’s classes will show you how to see the beauty of the world, whether it is a still life, landscape or portrait, as a mosaic of harmonic color notes. To register contact Katie Swatland katie.swatland@gmail.com.
"I teach people how to think right when approaching the task of painting. With a good approach, an artist can discover what it is that makes the painting authentic and beautiful. In other words, what makes a painting sing." —J. Keledjian

Intermediate and Advanced Painting with Peter Granucci
Saturdays (1 day/month) Sept. 2007-May 2008
9:00-4:00 pm $720/year
This class is an ongoing exploration of the fundamental principles of painting and illusion- making. Each year we focus on different aspects of this exciting journey. It is a combination of exercises and personal paintings that will help unlock the subtleties of and beauty in each student’s work. This is about how to strive for excellence. The goal is to gain mastery of the fundamentals of all picture making: values, drawing, color, composition, paint handling and their infinite interactions. The lessons are designed to give a deep appreciation and mastery of these principles and each lesson is designed to provide problem solving strategies so when working alone solutions can be found to the many challenges of painting. It is through understanding that paintings become easier and more accomplished. This is a student-based class therefore we can be flexible to address concerns of the individuals in the class. All levels can benefit from increased understanding of these traditional techniques. A materials list and information on a monthly payment plan are available upon request. Dates: Sept. 15, Oct. 6, Nov. 10, Dec.1, Jan. 5, Feb. 2, Mar, 1, Apr. 5, May 3, (Jun. 7, make-up snow day). Contact Peter Granucci <granucci@worldpath.net> for materials list or for questions while Village Arts is closed for vacation. Students are welcomed to join any time of the year.

Peripheral Seeing (Portraiture) with Casey Baugh
Third Wednesday per month, ongoing
9:30-4:30 Tuition: $300 per quarter
Peripheral Seeing is a class for intermediate and advanced artists who wish to master the structure of head, neck and shoulders. The class is designed for painters who have some understanding of color mixing and form. Ongoing study will include: Anatomy of head, neck, shoulders, setting up and lighting the model, measuring techniques, simplifying shadows, breaking head and shoulders into simple shapes, mixing flesh tones and understanding the temperature of light and shadow. As the group gains experience, participants will take turns setting the model for the portrait session. This monthly group will include demos, individualized instruction, constructive criticism and future shows of student work. Space Limited to 10.
Casey Baugh was born in 1984 to Jerry and Angie Baugh in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Baugh’s earliest art instruction came around the age of four from his father and aunt who were artists by hobby. This nurturing, along with Baugh’s early interest in art, gave him the strong foundation and motivation that would allow him to produce and sell professional work by the age of 13. At age 14, Baugh won his first regional competition and by age 17, he had won his first national competition. With no formal training, Baugh continued to educate himself by studying the work of other accomplished artists. In the spring of 2004, he conducted his first workshop at the Village Arts of Putney in Vermont. Now, at age 22, Baugh has made two television appearances and won numerous awards including the cover competition for American Artists Drawing Magazine. Baugh believes that good art “requires a distinct idea and a thorough knowledge of the language [of art] by which to communicate it. A good artist always has something to say, but truly great artists have obtained the ability to say it through experience and sheer determination.” It is with this mind-set that Baugh is doing work comparable to artists three times his age and has continued to conduct workshops, offer demon. We are not sure what the foursome will plan this July, but we know it will be full of learning and entertainment! This is an invitation-only day for participants in Albert and Anita’s workshop.
